On September 11, 2001 an attack occurred in this country, the magnitude of which had not occurred since attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Over 2900 innocent civilians were killed in New York City at the World Trade Center, Washington D.C. at the Pentagon and in the fields of Shanksville Pennsylvania. Terrorists using commercial airliners as weapons coordinated attacks in…..
Tomorrow, March 27, at 7p.m. I’ll be in Long Beach signing my autobiography Life on the Thin Blue Line for some of my oldest friends and neighbors. Growing up in Long Beach, it’s very exciting to look around and reflect back at my career and share some of my experiences. I still have a major commitment to Long…..
Snow:
Great for kids…another day off from school ~ Annoying for most of us…shovels full, bad backs, wet, sloppy ~ Awful for emergency responders!
I vividly recall the Blizzard of 1977. I had just begun a practice and was the busiest and youngest surgeon at Cabrini Hospital. The snow had piled up over several feet in…..
Nurses were always important, but I think looking ahead they’re going to be the centerpiece of medical care. For years nursing ranks as the most trusted profession in America. As you will discover in my autobiography “Life on the Thin Blue Line“, two wonderful nurses inspired me to write my book. I’m married to a nurse who has seen me through some of the most challenging times. Nurses were there for me when I was deathly ill with…..
A Blog for the New Year:
One of my favorite Irish groups was the Wolfe Tones. Their song “Seasons” always reminds me of the constant cycles of events of life. It’s a new year, a supposed new start of things (like taxes and laws) with new politicians in office and new hopes. I however would like to share the reality that while things change, they really stay pretty much the same.

Tuesday night, Richard Hambleton died. Most people outside of the art world are unfamiliar with him, but as a contemporary and colleague of Jean-MichelBasquiat and Keith Haring he was a pillar of 1970’s street art. The obituaries and articles about him are arriving. Bedford-Bowery, Art-Forum, Artnet His life was as troubled, tormented and precarious as anyone’s in the art…..
I’ve been called a hero. I even got a medal for Valor from the NYPD for being a first responder on 9/11. I never really felt like a hero, and I don’t think other people who are heroes feel like heroes. My daughter, however, put things in perspective for me recently. She was a substitute teacher and referred to the following article as the class discussed heroism.
Basically, she boiled it down to Opportunity, Circumstance, Choice. Listening to the…..
